In the example I just mentioned where I want a new set of cells next to the Good/Bad/Ugly column, I would select the cells in that column starting with the header row and then in the Split Cells dialogue box specify the number of rows and columns I want.

The dialogue box will by default show the number of rows in your selection and twice the number of columns, so in this case there would be nothing to change with respect to those values.

However, since my existing cells have text in them, I would need to uncheck the Merge Cells Before Split option before I chose OK.

If you let Word merge the cells before it splits them all of the cell contents will end up split across the cells in your topmost row.

That’s how to split cells. They remain part of the same original table, there are just more of them when you’re done.
